Of the many parks and conservation sites in and around Allegheny County, none is more fascinating than Dead Man’s Hollow. Located just outside of McKeesport, PA, Dead Man’s Hollow is steeped in a history of tragedy making this suburban park a common setting for many of the region’s popular ghost stories. The first reported incident in Dead Man’s Hollow came in 1874 when three boys discovered the body of a man hanging from a noose along the banks of the Youghiogheny River. Nearly ten years later, a group of men who were employed at a local stone quarry lost their lives when, without warning, the dynamite used to level the stone erupted in a catastrophic explosion. Over the decades to come, Dead Man’s Hollow was struck by tragedy after tragedy including the Great St. Patrick’s Day Flood of 1936, the Union Sewer Pipe Company Fire of 1925, and a devastating tornado in 1944. These events have inspired several regional ghost stories and have even spawned tales of giant serpents silently slithering through the underbrush of the hollow. There is certainly a lot of mystery that surrounds this small piece of the Allegheny County park system, and although none of these claims has ever been scientifically substantiated, Dead Man’s Hollow can evoke a strong sense of curiosity and wonder in any park visitor. Local historians and amateur ghost hunters frequent the park regularly to absorb the tragic history that has intrigued area residents for so long. Now, of course, the park is an ecological wonderland offering 400 acres of thick woodlands, streams, protected nature preserves, and hiking trails that wind through the property.
