Pittsburgh neighborhood Highland Park is known for its colossal houses, ornate architecture, spacious yards, and distinctive wooded scenery. The many trees that line the streets of the neighborhood offer shade in the summertime but also hint at the general majesty of the park itself, the Pittsburgh Zoo, and the natural surroundings of the area. One aspect of Highland Park that often gets lost in the natural beauty of the neighborhood, however, is the small but highly prized business district along the blocks of Bryant Street. Some of the city’s most highly rated dining establishments are located along Bryant Street: Park Bruges CaféJoseph Tambellini Restaurant, and E2. Park Bruges is the newly opened location of the successful Point Breeze eatery, Point Brugge, a traditional Belgian styled bistro that is commonly heralded for their pommes frites and craft beer selection. Park Burges adopts a similarly Belgian menu but offers regular live entertainment with its Monday evening jazz series feature the Park Bruges House Band. For some of the best Italian inspired cuisine in the city, Joseph Tambellini offers expertly prepared veal, chicken, steak, and pasta dishes to hungry patrons. Paired with one of their extensive collection of California and Italian wines, a meal at Joseph Tambellini can make for the perfect romantic evening. A wonderful addition to the culinary landscape of Highland Park is Chef Kate Romane’s E2, a small but welcoming restaurant offering rustic Mediterranean fare and specializing in small plates of locally sourced produce and goods. The recently opened downstairs seating area has effectively tripled the capacity of the restaurant making this the perfect place to share a meal with friends and family.

With so many fine dining options available in the Bryant Street business district, it is no wonder that Highland Park is such a desirable neighborhood for residential living. Lobos Management’s Yorkshire Apartments is located right at the heart of the neighborhood providing quick access to Bryant Street, the park, and the Pittsburgh Zoo. Situated at the corner of Callowhill Street and North St. Clair Street, this Lobos Management property is just blocks from the Highland Park business district and even closer to the park entrance making this the ideal location for any neighborhood resident. Shadyside has long been a destination for Pittsburgh area shopping, dining, and nightlife, but recent years have highlighted another neighborhood attraction – the annual Shadyside House Tour. Every September, the Shadyside Action Coalition sponsors this self-guided tour of roughly eight renovated, historic, or architecturally relevant homes, allowing curious visitors to learn about the rehab, styling, and history of the properties along the tour.   This annual home showcase celebrates its 35th year in 2013, clearly demonstrating the local interest in the community and the houses that dot the city blocks from Centre to Fifth and Neville to Penn Avenue. Proceeds raised from ticket sales to the House Tour are dedicated to funding scholarship programs at Winchester Thurston, providing assistance for children to attend the Shadyside Center for the Arts summer camp, as well as other community oriented projects: installing bicycle racks, neighborhood watch signs, and developing information packets for new residents of Shadyside. The House Tour is certainly one of the most interesting and original aspects of this popular Pittsburgh neighborhood as it offers non-residents the opportunity to briefly experience life in Shadyside.

Of course, the House Tour is also open to current residents of the neighborhood, and what better place to live than in Lobos Management’s James Manor. Located along the tour route on Ellsworth Avenue, James Manor offers one and two bedroom apartments with convenient off-street parking on site. Just blocks from the entryway to the building is the bustling business district of Ellsworth Avenue where boutique shops and high end restaurants draw visitors from all over the region. Notable restaurants include the Harris Grill, the Big Burrito Company’s Soba and Umi, and the 1947 Tavern. The city of Pittsburgh has two central arteries that run parallel through neighborhood after neighborhood: Penn and Liberty Avenues. Where South Aiken crosses the intersection at Centre Avenue – bridging Shadyside into Bloomfield – Liberty Avenue picks up and extends through the main drag of Bloomfield, on into the Strip District, and then into downtown Pittsburgh. Although Liberty is a relatively short stretch of city road, it does serve as a main passage through the very heart of the city where it converges with Penn Avenue at Point State Park. The much longer of these two roads, Penn Avenue, shoots away from Liberty at Main Street where Bloomfield meets Lawrenceville and continues through Garfield, East Liberty, Point Breeze, and Wilkinsburg until it merges into the William Penn Highway which eventually serves as a gateway to the Parkway East. Downtown, Penn Avenue is home to the Cultural District of the city where Heinz Hall, the Byham Theater, and the Benedum Center draw tens of thousands of visitors annually. Continuing away from the Point, Penn Avenue cuts through the Strip District and into Lawrenceville, a neighborhood that is quickly becoming a city hotspot for arts, nightlife, and high end dining.

With these two major arteries moving through so many city neighborhoods, it stands to reason that Lobos Management would have many properties available along these highly trafficked routes. In addition to the many properties maintained in the Shadyside / Bloomfield part of Pittsburgh, Lobos Management also has buildings all throughout the East End, providing quick access to Penn Avenue and ultimately to the Parkway East. Baum Grove, for instance, is just one block from Penn Circle; Lobos Management’s Highland Manor and Fenwyck Apartments are equally close to this important city street. Despite its geographic size and population, the city of Pittsburgh is often referred to as a “small city” or a “big town,” and much of this homey feeling has to do with the manner in which one neighborhood is connected to another: by bridge. In other major American cities, traversing from one district to the next can require multiple bus routes, lengthy subway commutes, or excessive traffic, but in the city of Pittsburgh, passing into a new zip code is as easy as crossing a river. Oakland – the bustling and heavily populated collegiate neighborhood – is located across the Monongahela from another densely populated neighborhood, Pittsburgh’s South Side. The main throughway in Oakland, Fifth Avenue, is bisected by the Birmingham Bridge which crosses over the Mon, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, Orsmby Field, and T-bones at East Carson Street. Alternatively, the Hot Metal Bridge connects Oakland to the South Side via Bates Street / Second Avenue and dead ends at the newly constructed SouthSide Works, a shopping plaza that includes an Urban Outfitters, Sur La Table, and a movie theater. Where Oakland is full of studious pedestrians wandering from building to building, the South Side is a distinctly different neighborhood with an atmosphere of its own. From 10th Street to 29th Street, the long blocks of East Carson are home to countless bars and restaurants making a busy weekend night on the South Side feel like Fat Tuesday in the French Quarter.  With access to shopping, dining, and a wealth of watering holes just across the Hot Metal or Birmingham Bridge, the South Side can offer an exciting evening away from the books, libraries, and study groups of Oakland.

Lobos Management maintains a property at the intersection of Atwood and Bates Street – the very road that leads to the Hot Metal Bridge and the glimmering lights of Carson Street. With studios and a five bedroom apartment available in the raised ranch style building, residents of 402 Atwood Street enjoy the many benefits of living between North Oakland and East Carson Street: access to higher education, affordable dining options, and the many bars and nightclubs on the South Side. For more information about Lobos Management or any of our other Oakland area apartments, please visit our website at http://www.lobosmanagement.com or track us down on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/lobosmanagement.

The Pittsburgh suburbs serve as home to some of the most convenient and accessible shopping malls in Western Pennsylvania, making these outlying areas a destination for city residents and a major attraction for shoppers from all over the region. South Hills Village in Bethel Park is one of the area’s largest indoor shopping plazas and houses over 130 specialty stores, department stores, and eateries. With a Sears, Barnes and Noble, J Crew, and Apple store, South Hills Village has something for everyone: homemakers, avid readers, fashionistas, and techies alike. The area around the mall includes several other small shopping plazas that include discount shopping at Gabriel Brothers and Big Lots, specialty home store Bed Bath & Beyond, a Carmike movie theater, and a Best Buy. Other notable stores in the area include Burlington Coat Factory, Kohl’s department store, Home Depot, Office Depot, and Toys ’R’ Us / Babies  ‘R’ Us. With all of the options for specialty shopping in Bethel Park, it is no wonder that the South Hills is such a popular site for area bargain hunters and holiday shoppers.

Just minutes from South Hills Village is Lobos Management’s Berkshire apartment building. Located at 7168 Baptist Road, the Berkshire offers spacious one bedroom apartments with renovated kitchens and baths, walk-in closets, and off-street parking. The beautiful garden-style apartments include easy access to laundry facilities, plenty of storage space, and beautifully maintained lush-green grounds. Balconies offer residents a casual and scenic place to sip morning coffee while overlooking the surrounding natural landscape. Apartments feature stunning hardwood floors, plush carpeting, and brightly tiled kitchen spaces. The location of Lobos Management’s Berkshire apartment building is perfect for anyone interested in experiencing the convenience of suburban shopping while being just minutes from access to the culture and history of downtown Pittsburgh. As the largest city in the western half of Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh metropolitan area is certainly a cultural melting pot where global cuisine, traditions, and heritage are celebrated regularly. Along the North Shore of the city is Pittsburgh’s Deutschtown, a nationally recognized historic district that hosts a weekly flea market and annual Pumpkinfest for both neighborhood residents and visitors from across the river. Just off of the Strip District is Polish Hill where the Polish Hill Arts Festival has been thriving as the neighborhood’s only formally organized community event since 2008. This family friendly festival – held on a Sunday afternoon each July – features local arts, musicians, and food vendors who offer a variety of international cuisines. Suburban neighborhood, McKeesport, hosts an annual International Village festival during the third full week of August each year. While the primary focus of the festival is a celebration of food, there are also craft vendors and continuous live music being performed at Renzie Park near McKeesport Area High School. The 2012 performance lineup featured polka music and dancing during the daylight hours and live bands from the area at night. A noteworthy musician from the recent festival was local musical hero, Scott Blasey of The Clarks.

Lobos Management’s Shaw Manor in McKeesport is just blocks away from the site of the annual International Village, providing quick access for building residents to the food and entertainment offered annually at Renzie Park. The large building features one and two bedroom apartments, fully equipped kitchens, and plenty of off street parking for tenants. Located at 604 Shaw Avenue, this Lobos Management property is just minutes from the public transportation line bringing convenient access to all that the city has to offer. Many of the suburban neighborhoods around the city of Pittsburgh offer area residents access to fine dining establishments and high end cocktail bars. Cranberry Township, for instance, serves as a second home for established Pittsburgh based restaurants including Mad Mex, Tamarind, and BRGRRestaurant ECHO, the area’s premier fine dining restaurant, is nestled seamlessly into the suburban skyline like a culinary jewel shining along a landscape of homogeneity and chain restaurant monotony. With such exciting local dining options becoming increasingly more available in the suburbs, it would only make sense for other outlying neighborhoods to follow suit and begin offering locally owned and operated eateries. The largely residential suburb of Penn Hills is not typically known for its gastronomic prowess as the majority of dining options are strip mall Chinese and pizza joints, but there is some movement toward high end dining. Opened in 2000, the Green Forest Churrascaria brings the flavors and traditions of a Brazilian seafood and steakhouse to the Pittsburgh area. After fire roasting a variety of specially seasoned and skewered meats, table service at Green Forest regularly draws carnivores from the city to dine in their Penn Hills establishment. Servers at the Churrascaria walk the dining floor carrying the skewered slabs and wielding butchery blades to carve tasty tidbits onto the plates of patrons. As a locally owned business, the Green Forest Churrascaria has been a celebrated part of the Penn Hills community and will hopefully inspire more successful fine dining establishments in the area.

Located just through Crescent Hills along Saltsburg Road is Lobos Management’s Sycamore Gardens, a beautiful apartment complex that features one bedroom apartments and renovated living spaces. Standout features of this particular Lobos Management property are the private balconies that lead to scenic overlooks of the area surroundings. Spacious rooms with hardwood floors and lush carpeting are another highlight of the Sycamore Gardens, making this property the perfect apartment building for entertaining or hosting a get together to watch the Steelers take the field on a Sunday afternoon. The proximity of this Lobos Management property to the Green Forest Churrascaria is another added benefit – especially for gastronomes and meat lovers. The art and architecture of the first decade of the 20th century reflect the optimism suggested in such euphemisms for the period as the Belle Epoque and the Gilded Age. Prosperity and relative peace throughout Europe and the United States sparked a renewed interest in natural beauty, as evidenced by the Art Nouveau movement; during the same time, the American middle class tried to emulate the ideals of loveliness embraced by academia and the wealthy. Such seemingly everyday projects undertaken during this time as the Cinderella Building in Pittsburgh provide a poetic and enduring example of the endeavor to incorporate romance and perfection into the lives of working people.

The building’s name seems especially appropriate when considering the materials used to construct its exterior. Made of coal ashes and cement, the building gives the appearance of a refined form of stucco or adobe. A wood frame reinforces the structure of the Cinderella Building, which remains sound after nearly 110 years.

Although historians debate the reason for the innovative components of the Cinderella Building, the fact remains that a combination of vision and economy contributed to the project. A 30-day bricklayer’s strike prevented masons from working on its construction, but architect Frederick Scheibler also strove to promote the use of ash cement as an ingredient in exterior building and advocated the material over more conventional products. Although the cost for the project remained about the same as that of a conventional building, romantics and architectural devotees continue to foster interest in the Cinderella Building.

Few residential city neighborhoods remain as untouched by development and urban sprawl as Pittsburgh’s Bellevue, an historic suburban community located northeast of the downtown area. Situated along the banks of the Ohio River, residents of Bellevue enjoy all of the benefits of small town life while still maintaining easy access to area shopping, dining, and nightlife. Just north of the neighborhood is the West View Park Shopping Center, a strip mall that is built upon the former site of West View Park, a functioning Pittsburgh area amusement park that went out of business in the late 1970s. The park was operational for seventy-one long years before succumbing to financial difficulties and closing the doors to the public.  Resourceful area planners constructed the shopping center in 1981 and integrated design aspects of the original park in order to trigger nostalgia in area shoppers and pay homage to the long standing amusement facility. Many of the shops and restaurants located along Perry Highway prominently display artifacts and photographs that celebrate the history of the park, clearly demonstrating the impact that the rides, games, and concessions had upon the area. Residents of Bellevue can now pick up groceries at the West View Giant Eagle, enjoy some satisfying “sandwich art” at the Subway, or sit down to a feast of hush puppies and white fish planks at the Long John Silver before stopping at K-Mart to pick up household essentials. Just up the highway is another long string of area shopping in Ross Township where dining and shopping options are plentiful. Along McKnight Road, the Ross Park Mall offers residents of the North Hills an entire wing of high end designer and couture storefronts including Tiffany & Co., Coach, and Lacoste. With so many options for shopping in the North Hills, residents of Bellevue are in a prime location for weekend bargain hunting and casual shopping.

Lobos Management’s Orchard Apartments is a beautifully maintained apartment complex located at the heart of Bellevue. The large apartment building houses efficiency apartments for those with basic accommodation needs and also offers one, two, and three bedroom units – many options to satisfy any living arrangement. The scenic grounds feature walled in gardens and winding pathways that lead to the building’s entrance. Public transportation can be accessed just off of the property grounds, providing quick access to the West View Shopping Center, the Ross Park Mall, and to the city of Pittsburgh. For more information about Lobos Management or any of our other Bellevue area apartments, please visit our website at http://www.lobosmanagement.com or track us down on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/lobosmanagement.

Like any major American city, Pittsburgh offers residents access to many indoor gymnasiums and workout facilities. Urban Active in Bakery Square – recently acquired by the ubiquitous chain, LA Fitness – houses a miniature cinema in its cardiovascular wing providing entertainment for joggers and tread climbers. Shadyside’s X and the Fitness Factory are state of the art facilities that are just blocks away from Oakland, Bloomfield, and Highland Park. Although these gyms do tend to become relatively crowded during peak workout hours, the equipment and services offered are worth the wait. Club One Fitness has locations throughout the city and is consistently voted the number one health club in the area. The East End facility features a full aquatic center and therapeutic spa that offers sauna, steam bath and massage. Club One also houses an aerobic dance studio in its smaller Squirrel Hill studio space (called Bodiography) where group exercise sessions and private classes are available to area residents. Bodiography is the area’s premier studio for ballet, jazz, and modern dance where patrons can choose from a wide variety of a la carte classes. The cost per class is an affordable $15 / session.

Within blocks of this Club One facility is Lobos Management’s Hobart Square, a large apartment complex that offers one and two bedroom rentals with fully renovated kitchens and plenty of storage space. Hobart Square allows easy access to area shopping, nightlife, and dining, and is just a few blocks from the historic Manor Theater where blockbusters and art films grace the silver screen. And, of course, Bodiography is easily accessible from this Lobos Management property making Hobart Square the perfect location for any area resident with a desire to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
