East Liberty Development and Dining

Posted on: October 30, 2012

Community development takes a strong commitment from a city and the residents of a neighborhood in order to ensure that growth brings prosperity, employment, and effective management of space. One of the most rapidly developing neighborhoods in the city of Pittsburgh is situated between Bloomfield, Garfield, Shadyside, Highland Park and Larimer: East Liberty. Development of the area began with the construction of several retail plazas. The Home Depot on North Highland Ave. provides building supplies and home goods to many city dwellers making it one of the busiest home improvement locations in the metropolitan area. Shortly after the Home Depot opened, the shopping plazas along Penn Avenue experienced significant growth; the old Shop and Save was transformed into a Staples, the city’s first Trader Joe’s was constructed, and the shops at Bakery Square opened with much fanfare. The most recent addition to the East Liberty shopping district is the Target department store, one of only a few multilevel Target stores in the country. In addition to the retail development in East Liberty, local chef and restaurateur Kevin Sousa seems to have made it a personal mission to bring fine dining and quick bites into the neighborhood. After successfully launching Salt of the Earth in nearby Garfield, Sousa has opened two more restaurants in East Liberty: Union Pig and Chicken and Station Street Hot Dog Shop. At Union Pig and Chicken, Sousa serves traditional barbeque: St. Louis style ribs, brisket, BBQ and fried chicken, as well as a variety of Southern side dish staples – baked beans, greens, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, and potato salad. Station Street Hot Dogs offers a variety of gourmet hot dogs that can be prepared with either a natural casing beef hot dog or a vegan veggie dog. Similarly, the fresh cut fries at Station Street can be cooked in vegetable oil or in the more decadent duck fat fryer. With all of this development in East Liberty and the surrounding area, it is quickly becoming a highly sought after residential neighborhood.
