Live Music in Oakland and Lobos Management’s Saxony Apartments

Posted on: October 26, 2012

Music – it is said – is a great unifier of people and culture, and for years, Oakland was at the heart of the thriving Pittsburgh scene. Throughout recent decades, though, Oakland has seen venues come and go, each with a certain amount of Steel City charm. The Decade in Oakland hosted legendary rock shows featuring U2, the Police, the Ramones, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Ray Vaughn up until closing its doors in 1995. The Graffiti on Baum Boulevard had a capacity of 600 making it an ideal location for midsized concerts, hosting acts like Nirvana, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Bonnie Raitt until closing in 2000. From 1996 until 2004, Club Laga hosted some of the most cutting edge punk and rock shows in Western Pennsylvania but was ultimately sold in order to build housing for local college students. Bands that performed at Laga included Blink 182, the Wu Tang Clan, Dashboard Confessional, and Coheed and Cambria. These are just of few of the now defunct live music venues in Oakland, but there are still a handful of places to see a show in the Pitt / CMU vicinity. The Sphinx Café and Hookah Bar opened in 2004 and occasionally features musical performances by local bands. And when Bruce Springsteen returns to town to jam with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, they often play at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall on Fifth Avenue in Oakland. Also, the University of Pittsburgh’s Peterson Events Center brings in nationally touring acts that are open to the public. Although Oakland is no longer a city destination for live music, there are still some opportunities for enjoying a night out in this bustling Pittsburgh neighborhood.

Living in Oakland provides easy access to all that the area has to offer, and Lobos Management has many properties in the neighborhood. The Saxony building at 229 North Craig Street has one and two bedroom apartments, renovated kitchens, easily accessible laundry rooms, and available indoor parking. Located along the public transportation line, residents of the Saxony can easily get to a venue in Oakland or to one of the many live music destinations located in other parts of the city.
