The Legacy of Forbes Field and Lobos Management’s Royal Windsor Apartments

Posted on: October 5, 2012

The city of Pittsburgh has a deeply rooted tradition in professional baseball beginning with the Pirates officially joining the National League in 1887. Just over twenty years after joining the league, the franchise constructed Forbes Field in Oakland which served as home to the Buccos until 1971. During the team’s first year on the field, the Bucs were led to a World Series title by Hall of Famer, Honus Wagner, the Steel City’s “Flying Dutchman.” In the decades to come, the Pirates claimed the Series again in 1960 with Bill Mazeroski’s game winning home run and then again in 1971 behind the Golden Glove and swinging bat of Roberto Clemente. Forbes Field was an integral part of the Pittsburgh landscape for more than sixty years, and although the stadium is no longer standing, there are some remaining remnants that still attract historians and sports enthusiasts alike. Stadium walls have been worked into the local architecture to commemorate significant moments in Pirate history, and the home plate that Bill Mazeroski crossed to take the 1960 Series is built directly into the lobby floor of the University of Pittsburgh’s Posvar Hall. Every year, baseball fans gather at the site to express their love for the game, their hometown team, and the legacy of the legendary Pittsburgh Pirates.

Surrounding Oakland’s shrine to our national pastime are several properties that are owned and maintained by Lobos Management. The Royal Windsor at 222 Melwood Avenue is a large property that houses efficiencies, one, two and three bedroom apartments and is located just blocks from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the historic home plate in Posvar Hall. Closer yet to the heart of Oakland is Lobos Management’s London Terrace, a beautifully maintained historic building at 135 – 137 Craig Street. With off street parking and access to everything that Oakland has to offer just steps away, London Terrace is a terrific rental option for the area.
