Bethel Park Recreation Services, Pickleball, and Lobos Management’s Bethel Terrace

Posted on: September 9, 2012

Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, Americans have developed a love affair with recreational leisure sports. Lawn bowling, badminton, billiards, horseshoes, lawn darts and disc golf have become staples of American backyard barbeques and holiday picnics. The fastest growing leisure sport at this time in our nation is one that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and whiffle ball: the peculiarly named pickleball. Rather than using a stringed tennis-like racket, pickleball utilizes a wide composite or graphite paddle to strike a porous plastic ball (called “the pickle”) over a net set at regulation height. PickleballCentral.com offers a wide variety of paddles, apparel, nets, balls, and gift sets for curious athletes and backyard gaming enthusiasts. Purchasing a set without ever playing the game, however, may not be the best decision. Thankfully, though, the Bethel Park Recreation and Leisure Services department sponsors a free “drop-in” program where people of all ages can try their hand at pickleball before making a monetary investment into the emerging sport. Every Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 12:30 until 2:30, players meet at the Bethel Park Community Center to face off against others with similar pickleball experience. In addition to introducing this new sport to residents of the South Hills, the BPRLS also sponsors swimming classes, recreational track meets, and plenty of classes for young athletes, artists, and dancers: painting, baton twirling, ballet, karate, rifle training, soccer, wrestling, and flag football. There is truly something for everyone at the Bethel Park Community Center.

Just minutes from the area’s largest free pickleball facility is Lobos Management’s Bethel Terrace. The building offers one bedroom apartments, each with a beautifully renovated and updated kitchen, off street parking, and easy access to public transportation and shopping.  The entire building is wired with an intercom system which allows residents to screen visitors before granting admission to the building. With so many recreational opportunities to take advantage of in the immediate area, Bethel Terrace is the perfect location for active residents of this Pittsburgh suburb.
