The Primanti Bros. Sandwich

Posted on: August 22, 2012

Although Pittsburgh is not known as a global hotspot for gastronomes or cutting edge food culture, the long legacy of Steel City cuisine can easily be sandwiched between two slices of thick cut Italian bread. Dating back to the 1930s, the Primanti Brothers’ “stuffed sandwich” has become synonymous with the city of Pittsburgh. Offering twenty varieties of handheld delights, each Primanti sandwich is topped with vinegar coleslaw, tomatoes, and hand cut French fries. At its inception, the classic Primanti sandwich served as an entire meal, complete with meat and sides packed neatly between two slabs of bread. After making deliveries to businesses in the bustling Strip District, it is said that truck drivers found the Primanti sandwich to be easy to eat while driving away from the city. It didn’t take long for the sandwich to gain popularity with local diners and within years, the Primanti sandwich had sealed itself into the foodscape of the city. During the summer of 2012, the Travel Chanel aired a special Man Versus Food series titled Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in AmericaEach week, host Adam Richman assessed three regional sandwiches using his trademarked B.I.T.E. scale: bread, interior, taste, and eating experience. The pilot episode featured the capicola, fried-egg and cheese sandwich from Primanti Brothers, and although the French fry packed Steel City favorite did not advance through the regional competition, Richman still heralded the classic Primanti as one of “the best sandwiches in America.” With locations all around the city, it’s never difficult to track down one of these culinary masterpieces.

Lobos Management has properties near several Primanti locations including buildings in Oakland, near the airport, and in Mount Lebanon where the newest Primanti site was recently opened. The Winchester property in Mount Lebanon is less than two miles from the new Primanti location; many Oakland buildings are just blocks from a Primanti Brothers, and the half dozen Lobos apartments in Coraopolis, PA are a short distance from one of the Steel City’s finest sandwich establishments. Foodies and fans of the sandwich are never far from this Pittsburgh institution, and any of these Lobos Management properties would provide easy access to a regular stuffed lunch from Primanti Brothers.
